There are many investors interested in the short term investments. Short term, however, often translates into risk-based investments. Long term investments are often tried and true strategies that lead down long paths of market and economic upturns and downturns, but often and reliably end up paying off.

Real Estate

Real estate investing has been shown to be one of the most lucrative long term investments one can make. For many investors it is seen as a tangible way to make money continue to work, in its most visible form. When real estate investing is taken seriously and property is purchased wisely, investments can either be turned over quickly or retained as rental properties.

Currently, the real estate market is enjoying an economic boom of sorts, even inciting experts to call the environment one of a market bubble. There are rapidly ascending home prices, increasing numbers of buyers and falling availability of properties. Many small-time investors have already earned their nest egg with real estate, often reselling properties in prime locales for twice what they initially paid.

For the most part, though, many financial experts suggest that the best real estate investments are those that will increase in value with long term investment as opposed to riding on the frenzy of any market bubble.

Stock Market

True, there are countless investors who play the stock market for the best and quickest advantage. Investors like these often pursue such high risk strategies as market timing, trends and buy low, sell high strategies that may or may not pay off.

For the long term, though, many financial experts recommend staying in the stock market. Diversify portfolios, invest in mutual funds and even bonds that when left to maturity might pay off nicely. The stock market is volatile in the short term. Stocks that fall off might not rebound, ever. Market timers and trenders are working overtime to predict an unpredictable windfall. The one thing that has been predictable about the stock markets thus far is the increases over time. Most analysts suggest that investments in the stock market will net investors more than most other strategies in the long run.
